The reaction comprises two steps that are both catalyzed by the same enzyme: formation of S-adenosylmethionine (AdoMet) and triphosphate, and subsequent hydrolysis of the triphosphate. May be involved in the synthesis of betain in response to abiotic stress such as high salinity.
