    Trifunctional enzyme involved in UDP-beta-L-rhamnose biosynthesis, a precursor of the primary cell wall components rhamnogalacturonan I (RG-I) and rhamnogalacturonan II (RG-II). Plays a major role in supplying UDP-rhamnose for flavonol biosynthesis. Catalyzes the dehydration of UDP-glucose to form UDP-4-dehydro-6-deoxy-D-glucose followed by the epimerization of the C3' and C5' positions of UDP-4-dehydro-6-deoxy-D-glucose to form UDP-4-keto-beta-L-rhamnose and the reduction of UDP-4-keto-beta-L-rhamnose to yield UDP-beta-L-rhamnose.

    1. Mutations in Arabidopsis RHAMNOSE BIOSYNTHESIS 1 (RHM1) cause dramatic left-handed helical growth of petal epidermal cells, leading to left-handed twisted petals. rhm1 mutant roots also display left-handed growth. PMID: 28736166
    2. GFP::AtRHM1 fusion protein was found to be localized in the cytosol of cotyledon cells and of petiole cells of cotyledon, indicating that AtRHM1 is a cytosol-localized protein. Overexpression resulted in an increase of rhamnose in the leaf cell wall as well as an alteration in galactose and glucose PMID: 19056285
    3. AtRHM1 is induced at transcriptional level by glucose and the regulatory elements involved in the glucose response are located in the region of -931 bp - -752 bp which contains three G-box motifs. PMID: 19160833
    4. In rol1 mutants of Arabidopsis thaliana, flavonols in the cell are glycosylated, rhamnose biosynthesis is affected, flavonol glycosylation profile is modified, and plant development and cell shape are changed. PMID: 18567791
