The recombinant human IL-18 is expressed in the yeast. Its expression region corresponds to amino acids 37-193 of the human IL-18. The 6xHis tag is fused to the N-terminus of this protein and allows for purification of this protein through metal affinity chromatography. This recombinant protein covers the full length of the mature protein. Its purity is over 90% measured by SDS-PAGE. It migrated to the molecular weight band of about 20 kDa on the gel. The target protein IL-18 acts to promote Th1 cell activation and enhance the cytotoxic activity of CD8+ T cells and natural killer (NK) cells by upregulation of FasL. It also plays a major role in the production of interferon-γ from T-cells and natural killer cells.

A proinflammatory cytokine primarily involved in polarized T-helper 1 (Th1) cell and natural killer (NK) cell immune responses (Probable). Upon binding to IL18R1 and IL18RAP, forms a signaling ternary complex which activates NF-kappa-B, triggering synthesis of inflammatory mediators. Synergizes with IL12/interleukin-12 to induce IFNG synthesis from T-helper 1 (Th1) cells and natural killer (NK) cells (Probable).
